The majority of lands in the city limits was developed by Frank Coggins in the late 1940s. The dam, constructed in 1948, is one of the largest earthen dams in the state. Since 1999, The City of Berkeley Lake has enjoyed the distinction of being a Tree City USA® city as awarded by the Arbor Day Foundation. In 2009, the City of Berkeley Lake was also awarded a $15,000 grant from the Georgia Forestry Commission for the ‘Maintaining a Sustainable Urban Forest’ project. The City of Berkeley Lake has been designated as an Urban Wildlife Sanctuary by the Humane Society of the United States.
