Tucker

Tucker is a community in unincorporated northeastern DeKalb County. It was originally settled in the 1820s, and later developed as a railroad community in 1892. After a referendum in the November 2015 general election approved it by a 3:1 margin, Tucker will incorporate as a city after a special election selects a new mayor and city council on March 1, 2016.

Tucker began a steady transition from an agricultural community to a mixed industrial, retail, and residential area following World War II.  Nearby employers in other areas of the county including the CDC in Druid Hills, General Motors in Doraville, Kraft Foods in Decatur, and the growth of Emory University, brought new residents to Tucker.

Tucker homes primarily consists of 1960s and 1970s-era ranch and split-level homes, and 1970s and 1980s-era multi-story homes. The latter two often feature daylight basements.

Despite phenomenal growth, Tucker retained its small-town character. Tucker Main Street has recently undergone a major, multi-million dollar renovation and streetscape design during the last few years, and is the center for all of Tucker’s main activities and events, including Tucker Day, Tucker Chili Cook-off and Tucker Cruise-in.

The Tucker Farmers Market brings together area farmers and artisans to offer their fresh produce and creative arts and crafts to the community from April to December.
