Underwood Hills

Underwood Hills is a neighborhood in West Midtown, nestled roughly between I-75 to the east, Atlanta City Water Works Reservoir to the south, Marietta Boulevard to the west, and Defoors Ferry to the north. The neighborhood provides relatively easy access to I-75/85 and the major business districts of Downtown Atlanta, Midtown and Buckhead.

The Underwood Hills area was conceived as a neighborhood as early as 1902, when it was dubbed Northside Park, but construction in this area — on the edge of the city — didn’t pick up steam until the 1920s. Many residents then were employed by the nearby Seaboard Coastline Railroad. Their brick and frame cottages and bungalows reflected modest lifestyles.

Building in the neighborhood continued through the post-World War II boom. But construction of I-75 removed some houses and turned the area into a residential island surrounded by the highway and major commercial corridors.

Underwood Hills homes consist of many bungalows and cottages built from the 1920s to the 1950s, but with many popular intown neighborhoods you will also find newer construction.

Underwood Hills is bordered by Home Park to the south, Berkeley Park to the east and Buckhead to the north. The neighborhood is situated in the 30318 zip code.

Atlanta Public Schools operates the public schools serving the neighborhood. The schools include Rivers Elementary, Sutton Middle School and North Atlanta High School.
