Originally known as Decoration Day, Memorial Day is a national holiday in the United States for remembering the people who died while serving in the country’s armed forces. So on Monday, May 30, 2016 take time to remember those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for their country. Here are the best Memorial Day celebrations in metro Atlanta.

The City of Alpharetta and Rotary Club of Alpharetta will host the 2nd Annual Alpharetta Memorial Day Tribute on Monday, May 30 at 9:30 a.m. at Alpharetta City Hall, 2 Park Plaza. The event is free for the public to attend.The Alpharetta Memorial Day Tribute will kick off at 9:30 a.m. with a performance by Alpharetta City Band followed by a program including keynote speaker, Captain Alec Fraser, who is a veteran, Rotarian and past-president of the Atlanta Rotary Club and noted speaker. The Program includes: Performances by Alpharetta City Band, Invocation, Posting of Colors, Pledge of Allegiance, National Anthem by Michael Horton and Isha Shrotriya, Keynote speaker Captain Alec Fraser, Laying of the wreath, 21-gun salute, and “Taps” performed by Daniel Gelber. The Dacula Memorial Day Parade once again steps off for the 23rd time on Monday, May 30, 2016 at 10:00 am.  The parade takes place rain or shine. Founded by Marvin Atherton, the Dacula Memorial Day parade has been a proud tradition in Dacula since 1994.  The parade has grown over the years and remains the only Memorial Day parade in Metro Atlanta, largest in the the state of Georgia and one of the largest in our nation with more than 150 units participating in the parade each year! Families begin to line the street hours before the parade begins.  Averaging 150 units in the parade each year, there are 10,000+ spectators lining the parade route when the parade steps off at 10:00 am.  Click here for more information.

For more than a half century now, a ceremony has occurred every Memorial Day at Marietta National Cemetery to honor all those who served and gave their life for our country’s freedom. It is a time to reflect on — and honor — those who stood heroically by their country during battle and who are today making the same unshakable commitment of valor in far away lands. On May 28, 2016 at 8 AM, the Saturday before Memorial Day, the Boy Scouts of America, Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts of America and Brownies will place flags on each grave. The Memorial Day event in Marietta begins at noon on May 30th and will feature patriotic music, posting of the colors, prayers, a gun salute and inspiring speakers. In remembrance of those who have given their lives in the line of duty in service to the country, Norcross will be hosting a Memorial Day Celebration in Thrasher Park. Enjoy hot dogs served by The Masonic Lodge at 11:30 a.m. and the 313 U.S. Army Brass Band plays at 12 noon. Click here for more information.

The Roswell Memorial Day Ceremony attracts approximately 6,000-7,000 people from throughout Georgia and the southeast. Each year, folks gather on the lawn of Roswell City Hall to honor those who have given their lives to protect our freedoms. Roswell Georgia is home to the largest Memorial Day celebration in the state of Georgia. This patriotic celebration features a military ceremony featuring guest speakers, the laying of the wreath, a 21-gun salute,honor guard, and patriotic music. The City of Smyrna will be holding the Memorial Day ceremony at the 20th Century Veterans Memorial on May 30, 2016, at 9:30 a.m. Join in on this day to honor and appreciate our commitment to peace through strength and sacrifice. In the event of inclement weather, the ceremony will be held in the Smyrna Community Center (200 Village Green Circle, Smyrna, 30080). The ceremony is sponsored by the City of Smyrna and coordinated by the Smyrna Veterans Committee, an organization composed of the City of Smyrna, The Veterans Memorial Association of Smyrna, and American Legion Post 160. The ceremony is a public event and all are invited to attend and participate in this memorial service to honor those who have sacrificed in defense of our nation. Click here for more information.

Memorial Day Weekend at Stone Mountain Park on Friday, May 27, 2016 to Monday, May 30, 2016. The City of Woodstock join forces with the American Legion, Marine Corps League, and other local veterans groups to honor those who fight to keep us free. Join on Memorial Day for a special service of remembrance in The Park at City Center. The East Cobb New Horizon Band will make the occasion even more special.
